*This is a compilation of different articles, and some used direct quotes while some didn’t. I tried my best to convey the exact meaning. Enjoy!*
Jiwon: We’ll start going on music shows too now, and everyone’s worried about the dancing. To be honest, we’re not really a group that does “knife dance”. That’s hard to do because different members have their own unique styles.
Sunghoon: We’re dancing the same choreography, but the feels are all different.
Jiwon: It’s called one’s preference. We respect preference, so we don’t do “knife dance”. When our moves aren’t wrong but look different, please know that it’s because we have our own preferences.
Sunghoon: Our fans know when we make mistakes. Jiwon hyung makes the most. He made a mistake while singing “Yegam” on Radio Star.
Jaeduck: You have to understand, as we age, our memories are failing.
Jiwon: Are you saying I have dementia?
Jaeduck: No, I’m just saying it’s becoming harder to remember things.
Sunghoon: You guys think Jekki’s dancing machines are Lee Jaijin and Kim Jaeduck, but Jaeduck hyung makes the most mistakes.
Jaeduck: I don’t make mistakes on stage. It’s because I can’t remember stuff during practices.
Sunghoon: It was our dream to film a real MV. I’ve always envied YG’s MVs. I envied the cinematic quality of Big Bang’s MV. I’ve fulfilled that wish.
Jaeduck: Hyunsuk hyungnim put a lot of care into it. He edited the MV for us himself. It’s been said that Sechskies is unlucky in terms of MV. We filmed our 4th album MV in Guam, but it didn’t get shown at all. I’m very satisfied with this MV. All the members look really good.
Jiwon: Being in YG and making an album together itself was a huge dream come true. I felt that even before filming the MV. I didn’t have any worry.
#Yang Hyun Suk
Jiwon: He’s like a doctor.
Jaeduck: He’s not a “Heo Joon”*, but a “Yang Joon” (*Heo Joon is a legendary doctor of Joseon Dynasty). After getting our MV footages, he kept saying there’s nothing to use. He edited the MV for us. We tried our best, but he has high standards so our levels of satisfaction were a little different.
Sunghoon: What’s hard the most is when Hyunsuk hyung comes down to dance practice room. I get nervous dancing in front of Hyunsuk hyung. I felt even more nervous than I did for our first music show.
Sunghoon: I would be lying to say I don’t have any expectations.
Jiwon: It’s impossible not to care because we see them. Nowadays, it’s all about how well we do on the chart. We have to work hard because it’s not something we can achieve just because we have expectations. I think we’ll have to do more things that the public will love.
Sunghoon: We don’t have any specific plans as of right now. But I think this promotion might give us a chance. Our Korean fandom is doing well. We trust them. We trust their selling skills.
Jiwon: We really want to do overseas promotions. But one of the biggest strength of Jekki is the nostalgia and old school style, but it’s hard to appeal those to international fans. But we’re in YG now, and they have a good foundation to go abroad. I want to go abroad with the help of the company.
Suwon: All the members are learning Japanese right now. Nothing’s been solidified, but you can see that as a preparation for overseas promotion.
Sunghoon: YG is investing a lot, so we have to do well.
Jaijin: Talking about money is always fun. We did get our income.
Jaeduck: Suwon probably made the most when his acting in “Love and War” became a hit (Everyone laughs)
Suwon: I made quite a lot even after we got back together. But of course it’s not as much as before (laughs). Even though I have to share the income with the members, I’m more happy to be with them.
Sunghoon: If it wasn’t for Infinite Challenge, Suwon would be focusing on his restaurant business after his acting loses its charm. Jaeduck would be married to Tony hyung. Jaejin hyung would be drawing, and Jiwon would be doing solo promotions. I’m very thankful to Infinite Challenge. However, we had planned reunion and a concert even before the program.
Sunghoon: The members must have been taking care of themselves. Their faces are looking better. The makeup skills have improved, I think. To be honest, our members don’t really take care of themselves.
Suwon: I don’t know how idols do it. We have some members that do it, but overall, I think sleep is the best medicine.
Jaeduck: I’m guilty because I’ve been going to the dermatologist lately. I do try myself, and YG staffs are really good at styling us.
Jiwon: I myself is surprised at how much I changed. When I get farther away from Hodong hyung, I lose weight. When we’re together, I keep wanting to eat more. I’m one of those people that always get acne, keep touching it, then get a scar. If I was just doing variety shows, I wouldn’t care at all, but right now I’m under Jekki’s name with my members so I think to myself “At least don’t be a burden to the team”. I’m trying to lose weight by eating 1 meal a day. But I’m sad that it’s always the day before a really important day that I eat a lot and I look plump on TV the next day. So I feel more burdensome when people say “your visuals are back”. I think “How am I going to live like this”.
Sunghoon: We didn’t really think about writing our own songs. We’ve always wanted to get songs from YG songwriters. So I’m really happy.
Jiwon: We do have some members that have continued doing music after Jekki, but we did Jekki only for 3 years. It’s too much of a burden to promote our own songs. We’re not ready yet, so we’re a little cautious. And I believe we need to find our own color first. Members need to get used to the how things are flowing right now. I believe we can write our own songs at any time later. But right now is when we need to get used to things. To be honest, we don’t really have that much thirst over it. What Jekki needs is popularity from the general public. If we write our own songs, we would all want something different, so we’ll just work with a producer. We’ll do music that the public can listen to with ease.
Suwon: Castings still come in from time to time. They don’t really ask me for quality acting, but I’ve been asked about joining fun web-dramas. If I was serious about acting, I would’ve gotten lessons, but I didn’t. After I signed with YG, Hyunsuk hyung makes sure that I don’t turn that way. I’m focusing on Jekki this year.
Sunghoon: We spent 3 years like it was 30 years. Those memories are still there. I can tell what the members are thinking by just looking at their faces. Jaijin hyung wants to go home, Jiwon hyung is mad, Jaeduck hyung wants to go to Busan, Suwon is blanking out like a robot again. I can tell this stuff. So we don’t even have to say much. We helped each other during recording too.
Jiwon: I’ve been a solo artist too, so I know the most. Having team members to rely on encourages me more. That’s the best part about being in a team.
#Ko Ji Yong
Every member said “He’s always welcomed” about the possibility of Ko Ji Yong participating as a special event.
Sunghoon: We are always open minded towards that friend. But he has his own job. I heard “The Return of Superman” is possible only because they shoot it during the weekend. But Sechskies can’t work only during the weekend. And he’s a father of a family now, so we have to respect the decision of our friend.
Jiwon: It’s hard to ask him every time we want to do something. We feel sorry as well. So we couldn’t tell some specific parts about our promotion. But the most important part is that we do wish Jiyong can participate in some important events.
Jiwon: It’s annoying that I have a 4 in front of my age now, but nothing is too different. Many people have told me not to mature. I think I’m far away from. I’m 40, and dongsaengs are to be 40 soon. But when we’re together, it feels like the time has stopped at when we were in our 10s and 20s. Our minds are still the same, but our bodies are not.
Suwon: We’ll show how old Korean idol groups can be. For that to happen, we need to renew our contract with YG. (laughs)
Suwon: Everything is going fine with my girlfriend. But we have no plan of getting married, and we’ve never even talked about it. If I do go though, I wouldn’t come back. Even if we don’t get along, I’ll keep trying to make it work.
Jiwon: If someone does get married, it’ll be Suwon since he has a girlfriend.
Jaeduck: If Suwon gets married, we’ll promote as 4 members.
Suwon: Then I’ll just go to The Return of Superman too. (laughs)
(In Mom’s Diary-My Ugly Duckling, Tony’s mom has said that Tony and Jaeduck should separate)
Suwon: It is also our goal to separate them before this year goes.
Jaeduck: Suwon gets jealous easily. I’m planning to move. Move into Tony hyung’s room. We’re thinking about using a bunk bed. People think when we separate, we’ll get girlfriends and get married. But how people view us from the outside is different from how we feel. I think living together has a lot of positive sides. I’m sorry to Tony’s mom, but we won’t listen to what other people say.
Jiwon: Jaeduck is clueless. He doesn’t know when to leave the scene. (laughs)
#How Jekki came together
Jiwon: I was a good student before I hit puberty, when I gave up on studying. I wanted to be a singer, and I met Sunghoon while I was studying abroad. I listened to music that I didn’t get a chance to listen to in Korea, and debuted as Sechskies.
Jaeduck: I wanted to become a soccer player. But I had to transfer to a school that didn’t have a soccer team. That’s when I met Jaejin- in 3rd year of middle school. Jaejin used to dance with his neighborhood friends, and I learned from him and participated in a variety of festivals in Busan. Back then, dance was everything. Watching Yang Hyun Suk, I wanted to be like him.
Jiwon: Then why were you under Lee Juno?
Jaeduck: My friend sent our video to different companies, and Juno hyung’s company reached out to me.
Jaejin: I clearly remember, we sent our video to 10 different companies, and got calls from 3 of them. They were Yang’s company, Lee Juno’s company, and Okay Music. Lee Juno’s company said “Come immediately”, and the other two said come during the break since we’re still students.
Jaeduck: We just went to Lee Juno’s company because we were desperate.
Suwon: If you weren’t desperate and came to Seoul during the break, you would’ve been in 1TYM. (laughs)
Sunghoon: I was chosen by our company’s CEO. It wasn’t really when groups were popular. I wanted to become Untitled’s rival, but he told us to become H.O.T.’s rival. So thanks to H.O.T., Sechskies was born.
#Then vs Now
Sunghoon: YG has a good recording system so I could sing comfortably. Members didn’t really change at all.
Jaejin: When we first debuted, we were happy to do anything. Right now, it’s a little different. Fortunately, YG doesn’t save money when it comes to investing in artists. It’s so nice that we can enjoy that kind of a system. I feel like I’m making an important footprint in my life at this point when we’re celebrating our 20th anniversary. Back then, we were just one of the many idols, but now, we’re one of the YG artists that participate in making albums and exhibitions.
Jiwon: The age of our fans have changed. Back then, we had a lot of student fans. I could talk to them like a real oppa comfortably. But now, they’ve become more mature so it was hard to talk informally to them. It felt a little strange at first, but I’ve returned to treating them like before now. It’ll be fun if we set the dress code for our fans as school uniforms for our next concert.
Jaeduck: I’ve never heard fans shouting “take off your clothes” before. They couldn’t say those things easily before, but now they do. I like how close we are.
Suwon: We saw a lot of children. Our fans must’ve come with their kids. Cramming method of teaching works. They even sang along our old songs, probably because they grew up listening to our songs.
Sunghoon: I hear our fans say “we can finally do things that we couldn’t do before”.
Jaeduck: Back then, I couldn’t really look at the fans because I was so focused on the stage. But now I can see their faces, and also their gazes. I feel their emotions too. It’s me who gets more touched by this.
Sunghoon: We just sw them in their school uniforms back then, but now they’ve all grown up, with a little more makeup. It’s mostly the appearance that changed the most. For example, I recognize the banner that someone’s holding, but the person holding it looks very different from then. Also, the fan culture today revolves around “cannon” cameras. We have to rest after dancing, but we also have to remember that we still have those cameras around us. To be honest, I don’t really like it, but it’s only right for us to get used to that.
Jiwon: It feels different now that we’re celebrating our 20th anniversary. It’s not easy to celebrate it as idols. We could do it only because our fans protected us. I’m also thankful to Infinite Challenge, and YG who accepted us late.
Jaeduck: It feels like yesterday that I debuted, but it’s been 20 years already. I’m more excited than before, when I just debuted without really knowing much. I think it’s because I’m with the members, the fans, and YG. I personally think 20 years is too short. I want to do it until 80th anniversary.
Sunghoon: I want this 20th anniversary to be like a gift to our fans. We’ve found out that dreams do come true by joining YG. I wanted to give out a hopeful message. You can see that when you see Jekki, you know. Right now, Jekki is in the “~ing” stage.
Jaejin: (pulled out a phone to read what he prepared) This year is the 20th anniversary, and I’ve spent a long time I spent in Seoul after moving from Busan in 2nd year of high school. Now, I’ll have more years to live as a member of Sechskies. Over the 20 years, I’ve had both good things and bad things happen to me. The past 20 years are what the fans have made for us. Thank you to our fans who made it possible for us to celebrate 20 years.
Suwon: It’s the year that our fans have waited for, so I want this to be like a gift to them. We worked hard because we wanted to meet their anticipations. We repared a lot, so we’ll keep ourselves busy this year.
Jiwon: It’ll be a little disappointing to think of this album promotion as a full album. This is not. It’s our 20th anniversary album, so it has 2 new songs along with our old hits. We just decided to do promotions to celebrate the anniversary. We’ll have a full album before this year ends. We’re working on it. New songs will probably come out before our concert. We also have some plans to go on variety shows individually, and as a team. We’re trying to do what the fans like because it’s our 20th anniversary.
Jiwon: We want to keep doing music which people will listen to and say “these hyungnims make cool music”. That is jekki’s goal and dream.
